Dr. Khaled S. Al-Sultan, a Professor of Systems Engineering, holds a B.S. (1985) and M.S. (1987) in Systems Engineering from King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals, and another M.S. (1990) in Applied Maths and Ph.D. (1990) in Industrial and Operations Engineering (Operation Research) from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, USA.
Dr. Al-Sultan was appointed as Rector of King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals (KFUPM) in May 2003. Before this appointment, he served as the Deputy Minister for Educational Affairs at the Ministry of Higher Education, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia for five years. Earlier, he was the Dean of College of Computer Science & Engineering (September 1996-August 1998) and Chairman of Systems Engineering Department (June 1993-August 1996) at KFUPM.
Dr. Al-Sultan served on the Editorial Boards of several international journals, has published 39 papers in refereed journals (has more than 200 citations to his credit), co-authored one book and 4 book chapters and attended several conferences. He is a member of several international professional organizations and consultant for several Government and private industrial institutions. Also serves as a member of Board of Directors of Saudi Aramco and King Abdullah University of Science & Technology, and ten other private and public institutions.
Received several honors and awards, including JPI Award for “Invaluable International Cooperation” from the Japan Petroleum Institute, Tokyo, Japan (2008); Microsoft Award for establishing the First High Performance Computer Lab at KFUPM, using Microsoft technologies (2008); Intel Corporation Award for Establishing the First High Performance Computer Lab in the Kingdom (2006); 2006 IEEE Annual Award for Outstanding Support to the Engineering Profession in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia; Middle East CEO of the Year 2005” awarded by Datamatix Group of Dubai, U.A.E., and International Computer Driving License “ICDL.”
