Prof. Abdul Rahman bin Obaid Alyoubi Is the present Rector and a Professor of Physical Chemistry at King Abdulaziz University (KAU), Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. He also served as Rector of the University of Jeddah since its inception to its detachment as an independent university of the King Abdul Aziz University. Prof. Alyoubi occupied the position of vice-president of KAU between 2001 and 2009, and the position of vicepresident for educational affairs, of the same university, between 2009 and June 2016. Prior to that he served for about ten years managing the Faculty of Science as the Vice Dean and Dean, consecutively. He received his bachelor's degree and master's degree in science from King Abdul Aziz University, and received a degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the field of chemistry and physical chemistry from the University of Essex, United Kingdom in 1986. And he received a professorship in the science of physical chemistry in 2000.
During his tenure at King Abdul Aziz University for more than thirty seven years, and despite his heavy involvement with administrative matters, he managed to excel in teaching, research, and serving the university and the community. To his credit are an excellent record of teaching, scientific research where it has more than 150 scientific research in classified scientific journals, and many research projects funded by the King Abdul Aziz University and King Abdul Aziz City for Science and Technology resulting in a large number of high quality publications.
Also added to his record, his work in more than eighty of committees, boards, councils, task forces and working groups at King Abdul Aziz University and many other universities at KSA. In addition to its contribution to the King Abdul Aziz University's efforts to establish some new Saudi universities such as the University of Tabuk, and the Northern Border University, Jazan University, and recently Jeddah University.
Also during his tenure at King Abdul Aziz University, the university obtained a number of international and national awards. He worked on the university development process to turn the university into a world-class university level, in addition to that most of the university's academic programs received accreditation from various global academic accreditation bodies. Added to that, the university achieved prestigious awards of performance in the ranking for the academic year 2016/2017 from Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings. The university achieved the best rankings positions in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Region, and advanced rankings of the Asian universities, THE World University Ranking award for KAU position (201250).
